Even by South African standards it was a shocking crime – the taxi in which a honeymoon couple were travelling carjacked, the husband thrown out, the taxi recovered later, the wife in the back seat – dead.Surprisingly quickly, the SA police had arrested suspects.
The initial assumption (mine at least) was the wife had been sexually assaulted and then killed – why else throw the husband out of the car and drive off with the wife.
My problem with this scenario is . . .
why would the carjackers leave alive the husband – a witness who could identify them?
Latest reports from S.Africa are that the wife was NOT sexually assaulted – which makes her killing all the more puzzling? And again, why would the carjackers leave the husband (a witness to identify them) alive but kill the wife?
S.African newspapers are now referring to this incident as an ‘apparent’ carjacking, suggesting some skepticism of the husband’s account of what happened.
When came news that the husband’s business is in trouble and that he is in debt to the tune of several £millions, cynical auld b*stard that I am, I immediately wondered if an insurance policy had been taken out on the wife.
The police, however, have said the husband is a witness, not a suspect, and they will be inviting him to return to South Africa to assist in an identity parade.
Meanwhile, it seems the Taxi driver has turned ‘State Witness’ – suggesting he was acting in collusion with the ‘carjackers’ – and there are reports that an “explosive revelation” is imminent
