Heather Raghavjee said allegations about Dewani somehow being behind her husband’s death had no substance.
Dr Pox Raghavjee was murdered in a carjacking three years ago, in very similar circumstances to the death of Dewani’s new bride, Anni.
Publicist Max Clifford, who represents Dewani, issued a statement from Mrs Raghavjee, which said: ‘I am very upset myself, and particularly for Shrien and his family, for the dreadful accusations that have emerged from South Africa, concerning the murder of my husband three years ago.
‘Shrien Dewani is suffering from the tragic murder of his wife, which is made even more painful for him by horrible really fake accusations that have come out of South Africa. There is absolutely no substance in these allegations, and my heart goes out to the young lad.’
Police seized on the fact Mrs Raghavjee flew from her home in King’s William Town to see Dewani in Cape Town following the murder of his 28-year-ancient wife last month.
‘How flimsy and ridiculous this whole thing is. If it wasn’t so tragic it would be a farce, a comedy,’ said Mr Clifford.
Dewani, 30, from Bristol, was bailed from prison in London on Friday on a £250,000 surety as he fights extradition moves to South Africa.
