The Foreign Office has said Shrien Dewani, who is accused of conspiring to murder his wife on their honeymoon in South Africa, will receive "full consular support" if he returns there to face the charge.
Mr Dewani, 30, is fighting plans to extradite him and is currently on bail and living at his home in Passage Road, Westbury-on-Trym.
The MP for Westbury-on-Trym Charlotte Leslie raised the case in the House of Commons yesterday, asking the Foreign and Commonwealth Minister Henry Bellingham: "Is the Minister aware of the situation facing my constituent, Shrien Dewani, and can he inform the House of what measures his department is taking to ensure that he receives appropriate British support?"
Mr Bellingham told MPs: "When I was in South Africa 10 days ago, I raised this case with the consul general and his team. He made it clear not only that everything possible had been done to support Mr Dewani but that if he returns to South Africa, he will receive full consular support.
"Ms Leslie has done all that she possibly can to help the family and has been absolutely exemplary in what she has done to assist them."
Two men are due to stand trial next year for the murder of Mrs Dewani, 28,who was kidnapped after the couple's taxi was hijacked in a shanty town.
She was later found shot dead in the back of the vehicle. The taxi driver has already been jailed for 18 years for his role. He alleges Mr Dewani paid him to arrange the hit.
